INTERNATIONAL TOURISM

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruin  of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It is always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

Nowadays people travel not only for pleasure but also on business. You have to go to other countries to take part in different negotiations, to sign contacts, to participate in different exhibitions, in order to push the goods produced by your firm or company. Travelling on business helps you to get more information about achievements of other companies which will make your own business more successful.

Going abroad nowadays is a usual thing for many families. Some people, however, stay unsatisfied with the time they have spent in a foreign country. What are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling abroad or is it worth staying at home?

One of the main advantages is the experience you get from being in a foreign country. While being abroad you have the opportunity to practice the language and socialize with citizens of the country you visit. This is especially beneficial if your occupation is connected with a foreign language.

Furthermore, you get acquainted with a new place and that makes you relax and forget about your routine life.  On the other hand, pretravelling process might be very depressing because of all the documents you should collect in order to enter the chosen country. What is more, you can get into trouble if you are not acquainted with the laws of the country you want to visit. What you are used to doing at home is not always normal for foreigners. Or you can also stay unsatisfied if the country you have chosen does not fit your expectations.

Express your own point of view on travelling (up to 15 sentences)

BRITISH CUISINE

Traditionally English people have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served in the morning. It used to be a large meal with cereal, eggs and bacon, sausages, tomatoes. But such a large breakfast takes a long time to prepare and is not very healthy. Nowadays, Britain’s most popular breakfast consists of cereal, toast with marmalade, juice and yogurt with a cup of tea or coffee. Lunch is a light meal. Most people have no time to go back home for lunch so they eat at school, cafes, pubs or restaurants. The main meal is dinner, which is usually between 6 and 7 p.m. A typical evening meal is a meat dish with vegetables and dessert. The most important meal of the week is the Sunday dinner, which is usually eaten at 1 p.m. The traditional Sunday dish used to be roast beef, but nowadays pork, chicken or lamb are more common. On Sunday evenings people have supper or high tea. The famous British afternoon tea is becoming rare, except at weekends.

Some people criticize English food. They say it’s unimaginable, boring, tasteless, it’s chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables. The basic ingredients, when fresh, are so full of flavor that British haven’t had to invent sauces to disguise their natural taste. What can compare with fresh pees or new potatoes just boiled and served with butter? Why drown spring lamb in wine or cream and spices, when with just one or two herbs it is absolutely delicious?
If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say «Fish and chips» then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food doesn’t lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home. So it is difficult to find a good English restaurant with a reasonable prices.
In most cities in Britain you’ll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. In London you’ll also find Indonesian, Mexican, Greek… Cynics will say that this is because English have no «cuisine» themselves, but this is not quite the true.

THE PROS AND CONS OF ONLINE SHOPPING

These days, it seems like everything is going digital. From news articles and recipes to yoga tutorials, you can find almost everything on the internet.

Many people find this way of life more convenient, because they can complete their daily chores from the comfort of their own home. I think that’s why some people like to shop for their clothes online. With the click of a button, you can order anything you want, and have it delivered directly to your front door. For someone with a busy lifestyle, this seems ideal.

Firstly, online shopping can be far less stressful than hitting the high street shops. There are no huge crowds of people or tediously long queues. With online shopping, it’s just you and your computer. It’s like you have the whole shop to yourself! Secondly, online stores don’t have opening and closing times. This is perfect for anyone with a busy schedule – like office workers who work long hours, or teenagers with several hobbies to squeeze into the weekend. If you want to, you can even place an online shopping order at three o’clock in the morning!

In the bustling modern world, there are clearly many advantages to online shopping. However, in my experience, there are also several cons … With online shopping, you can’t try before you buy, and that’s a definite disadvantage for me. Often, when my new clothes arrive, I find they don’t fit very well. It’s always annoying when a dress is a little too big, or when sleeves are awkwardly short … Sometimes, the clothes are not what I was expecting. A piece of clothing might look great in photos online, but quite different in real life. A blue jumper might turn out to be green, whilst other times the material of a blouse will feel cheap and scratchy.

In these scenarios, you want to return the item, but here lies the biggest problem with online shopping. You have to pay for your order’s delivery, and for an item to be returned to the warehouse! These charges are often very expensive, which suddenly makes online shopping seem a little less convenient…That’s why I don’t choose to shop online very frequently. For now, I will continue to find the time for a trip to a real shop, where I know exactly what I’m buying!

Express your own preferences in shopping (up to 15 sentences)

LIFE IN THE CITY VERSUS LIFE IN THE COUNTRY

I have to be honest, life in Vienna is pretty great. Ok that’s me being a bit British about it, life here is incredibly fun.  Although I am originally a country girl (I come from a small English village), I am loving the city experience. There is so much to see and do and a never ending list of cool restaurants to try and places to explore. But last weekend I decided it was time to venture out of the city and into the Austrian countryside for once, which I had heard was beautiful.

So, in search of rolling green fields and snow-capped mountains we hopped on a train to Innsbruck, a small city in the Tyrol area known for skiing. Even before we arrived, we were treated to some spectacular views on the train journey. Bright green fields stretched out before us, with towering mountains set against a clear blue sky. It almost looked too perfect to be real.

When we arrived in the city, the mountains were even closer, almost on top of us as Innsbruck is nestled in a valley. So everywhere you looked, there one was staring back at you.  The view at the end of the street? A mountain. The view from our room? A mountain. It was certainly very different from Vienna!

Even the center of the city is very different, with its narrow cobbled streets and decorated buildings that could have come straight out of a fairytale book. I found myself wondering what life would be like if I had chosen somewhere like Innsbruck for my year abroad, especially when we went to visit a friend in a nearby town, in the very heart of the mountains.

From up there, the views down into the valley were breathtaking. Imagine waking up to that everyday! Everyone seemed really friendly as well, always saying hello as we passed each other in the street (this would never happen in Vienna!). And after a short walk along a mountain path, surrounded by fir trees and the quietness of nature, the country girl in me was re-ignited. I almost found myself wishing that I lived out here.

But then I realized how small the place was and how difficult it might be to get around and that there probably wasn’t much to do apart from hiking and skiing! So as much as I had enjoyed the Austrian countryside and experiencing a more “typical” Austria, I was glad I could return back to Vienna and busy city life.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

The World Health Organisation recently released a report that 1 in 3 11-year-olds is overweight or obese. One of the solutions to stop the growth in overweight people in society is to introduce healthy lifestyle habits from as early as possible.

A balanced diet is the key to a healthy weight. Make sure that you eat a variety of foods. It is vital to eat from all five food groups. Try to buy fresh ingredients and free-range meats. Processed food often contains a lot of additives that are not as nutritious as fresh food. Make sure you include plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet. Modern dietitians strongly advise to eat 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day. Try to avoid fattening food and cut down on the amount of salt and sugar you eat.

Eat moderate portions and don’t be tempted to order a larger meal when eating out. Restaurants often serve portions that are enough for two or three people. Children should be getting smaller portions than adults. Make sure you eat regularly and don’t skip meals, this can help you to moderate snacking and control your appetite. If you have a food allergy, you don’t need to completely eliminate your favourite foods. Do check the food labels properly and avoid any of the ingredients that can make your condition worse.

Regular physical activity is also a crucial part of a healthy life. Exercise keeps you feeling good and helps you maintain a healthy weight.

To summarise, following a healthy eating plan can help you prevent overweight and obesity, it is therefore vitally important to include the right types of food in your everyday diet and to exercise daily.
